Completing a solemn journey from New York City, a World Trade Center beam will make a procession through Brevard County en route to Kennedy Space Center.
Completing a solemn journey from New York City, a World Trade Center beam on made a procession through Brevard County en route to its resting place at a Kennedy Space Center fire station’s 9/11 memorial. Friday afternoon hundreds gathered to welcome a piece of history. A piece that hits close to home for Mike Murray. "I lost two friends at the site that day and it's a special thing to be part of it," Murray said, holding back the tears.
The piece is a 2000 pound steel beam that once supported the World Trade Center in New York City. It arrived at the Kennedy Space Center Friday afternoon with police escort from Miami International Airport. While watching the 10 year anniversary coverage of 9/11, Tom Van Horn, an engineer firefighter for the Kennedy Space Center Fire Department made it a goal to create their own memorial at the space center. Four years later, this idea came to fruition. "We finally got granted the piece of the World Trade Center and that artifact will serve as a continuous reminder to us everyday," he said. "It's there to represent all the lives that were lost." While speaking with him, he looked down at his white gloves and said, "You see this dirt? That is 9/11, and I will never wash these gloves, I will be putting this in a memorial case."
Surrounding the beam, firefighters from New York to Florida had a moment of silence and prayer for those who lost their lives on that day 14 years ago. "When I see this, I couldn't even imagine what the emotions would be, and it came down to one word just speechless," said Lieutenant James Dumont from the Kennedy Space Center fire department. From firefighters and families, to even children who will learn about his day in their history books. All took a moment to appreciate this solid steel memento of one of America's darkest days. Tiffany Chetta who came to see the beam, with her 2-year-old nephew explained what this beam represents for her. "It means unity, all the lives that were lost not just firefighters but all the fellow Americans that we lost... It was a sad day so I want him to remember how we all came together as Americans. And even now, something this small, still brings all these people together."
The Kennedy Space Center plans to hold a special unveiling ceremony of the memorial on September 11th.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Oviedo, Florida P. D.'s K-9 Officer Nero after being diagnosed with cancer. Nero served alongside David Capetillo, Jr. and will be greatly missed.
The Oviedo Police Foundation is currently in the process of raising funds to obtain another K-9 for the department. The value and usefulness of these dogs in police work cannot be overstated and there is a hefty expense involved.
